Living in an Aperture

This 97 square-foot gap between two houses in urban Tokyo was transformed into an innovative residence. Tokyo is one of the most dense and overcrowded urban centers, so local architects have become innovative in their approach to space. The three story house is divided into two volumes, split by a void.

One volume contains the stairs and utilitarian spaces, while the other contains the living and working spaces. The house includes kitchen, bath, sleeping, lounging areas, and recreational outdoor space. The façade is turned to the void allowing privacy, light, and air. In the same time, the void allowed an extra floor of space to be built. This reflexive form is smart and proves that overcoming contingencies is beautiful.
