The Scoop: SPARK 2018 Buddy Run
On Saturday July 20 John, Lila and Steve Morrill rode in the 10th annual Buddy Run. For six years, Tocci has sponsored the Buddy Run, a fundraiser organized by Boston’s Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club. Riders and Buffalo Soldier Clubs joined from the city, nearby towns and as far away as Philadelphia and West Point, NY.
The fundraiser supports Boston Medical Center’s Supporting Parents and Resilient Kids (SPARK) Center, a medically-therapeutic child care facility providing integrated services to children and their families. They provide medical care, nutritious meals with family style love, on top of meeting educational and developmental needs.
The ride honors Buffalo Solider and Boston firefighter, “Buddy” Brown, who was killed on his way to work by a motorist. The Buffalo Soldiers support the SPARK Center because its mission and values align with Buddy Brown’s care and concern for the most fragile members of our community.
The police-escorted ride began and ended at the SPARK Center in Mattapan, MA, and traveled through Boston to the Canton area. Following the ride, a BBQ and tug-of-war rounded out the event. This year John Tocci addressed the crowd of bikers:
“Look at these beautiful bikes, carefully polished with specialized mirrors and handgrips. What if we took some of the money we’d spend on upgrading our bikes and gave it to the great work SPARK carries out, tirelessly caring for little children to help with their healing.”
Then Tocci offered to match same day contributions. Barbara Hughes, SPARK Center Operations Director, was on hand with her staff passing out envelopes and collecting donations. Thanks to everyone involved, the generous response was heartwarming and the event a tremendous success.
