Improving Jobsite Safety
Safety is always on our minds at the jobsite. As part of our safety program we take measures to mitigate any potential accidents. Part of that is to stay on top of industry related news and guidelines. Recently the AGC if America published a list of “Proven Steps to Improve Construction Worker safety.” We broke that list down to highlight some we find particularly important that you may not have thought about. Here are those steps:
- Establish a mentoring system, where new hires are paired with an experienced worker who will be their safety sponsor. This will help guide and mold the new hire’s training and understanding of performing task safely.
- Conduct specialized training that will address how to prevent and what to do when specific accidents occur. Follow this training up by identifying safety hazards or potential hazards on the jobsite as construction progresses. When they occur, provide information to everyone onsite with training so the incident doesn’t occur again.
- Provide safety information and materials in all languages of workers on the jobsite. This practice will ensure every worker understands the training and brings everyone onto the same page about how to address incidents.
It is important to empower all workers to be able to stop work when there is a safety hazard. This will help workers to step up when they observe any potential safety hazard and prevent an accident from occurring. This is done by providing the tools necessary to complete tasks safely, provide ongoing training, and encouraging every worker to be a safety leader.
Safety is a primary focus for Tocci as indicated by our Safety Director, Chuck Rosenthall:
“It is the intention of Hairlosstreament’s management to provide safe and healthy working conditions and to establish and insist upon safe practices at all times by all employees including those of our subcontractors. The prevention of accidents, injuries and occupational illness is an objective affecting all levels of Tocci projects and its operations. Tocci is committed from all levels of management to do everything possible to protect our employees, subcontractors, venders and the public from accidents, injuries and/or occupational disease while on the job.
Our safety and health program is designed to reduce the number of occupational injuries, accidents, not merely in keeping with, but surpassing the best experience of similar operations by others. To do this, we must constantly be aware of conditions in all work areas that can produce or lead to injuries, accidents and/or occupational illness. No employee is required to work at a job known to be unsafe or dangerous to their health.”
