Final Report: Moises Runs for LLS
On Sunday, March 18th (also his birthday!), Moises Berrun ran the NYC Half Marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York City with a Tocci Service Grant.
Here are his thoughts on the overall experience:
A few months ago, I attended a Yale Alumni meeting and witnessed a great group of people working on a variety of causes. One of the groups at the meeting partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York City (LLS) and Team In Training (TNT) to raise money for cancer patients and their families. In an effort to contribute to a worthy cause that helps people, I decided to join TNT and raise money for LLS. I trained with TNT to run the New York City Half Marathon and committed to raise $1600 for LLS.
I didn’t know what to expect when I signed up with TNT. I always ran by myself and for myself. With TNT, I ran with a group of people and heard testimonials from cancer survivors and from people currently in cancer treatment. Witnessing the struggles that fellow teammates had gone through battling blood cancers motivated me to do more. I realized my health was an asset that could be used for a greater cause.
Fortunately, I work for a company that values charitable giving. So when I approached Tocci about raising money for LLS, they were on board and provided a grant that matched employee contributions. I’m happy to report that with the generous contributions from friends, Tocci and Tocci employees, I raised over $2100 for cancer patients. Together with the TNT NYC Half Marathon Team, we raised over $916,115 for cancer patients and their families!
So how was the race Moises? Well, the race was a personal success. It was almost perfect weather on that Sunday morning. Though there was some humidity, the day started at just under 50 degrees with little to no wind. The only downside was waking up at 4:00 to make the 7:30 start time in Central Park. Towards the end of my training, I started to nail down an estimated finish time just over 1:37. That was my goal. Oh, did I mention I had a cold on race day and ran with a pack of tissues? But thanks to the structured training offered by TNT, I powered through the sniffling cold and finished in 1:36. With a cold, I beat my time estimate by over a minute!
It really felt good to be a part of something meaningful for other people. I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone at Tocci who helped me with my fundraising efforts to fight Leukemia and Lymphoma.
